Journey 2010 Accepting Applications for Summer Program
Sponsored by Howard County Women’s Giving Circle
The Women’s Giving Circle of Howard County is accepting applications for its residential summer camp, Journey 2010. The camp will include 40 girls entering 8th -9th grade in the fall of 2010. Maryland Leadership Workshops, Inc. (MLW) will operate Journey, as it has since its inception. The camp will be restricted to girls who are living in Howard County and now attending seventh and eighth grade. For further information, contact journeydirector@gmail.com.
MLW recently received a $50,000 grant from the Comcast Foundation to support a new initiative: the Comcast Leadership Series program. Through this grant MLW will engage approximately 50 students from 4-5 counties to design, implement and evaluate a community or school-based action plan to address a compelling need facing their schools and/or communities.
This grant from the Comcast Foundation is in recognition of Comcast’s commitment to the communities where its customers and employees live and work. Since its founding in 1999, the Comcast Foundation has distributed more than $65 million in cash support of programs implemented locally in Comcast communities.

MLW's Barrie Moorman win’s DC’s VFW’s Teacher of the Year Award
Congratulations to Barrie Moorman for being honored by the DC Veterans of Foreign Wars as their Teacher of the Year! This prestigious award recognizes the nation's top elementary, junior high and high school teachers who teach citizenship education topics regularly and promote America's history and traditions. Barrie currently serves on MLW's Policy Board, and teaches at the Capital City Public Charter School in Washington, D.C.
Chris Longmore Graduates Leadership Southern Maryland
Congratulations to Chris Longmore for graduating as part of the inaugural class of Leadership Southern Maryland! Between 1987 and 2002, Chris served MLW in various capacities including Executive Director, Vice-President, Advanced Leadership Seminar Director, instructor and counselor. Chris is currently an attorney/partner with Dugan, McKissick, Wood and Longmore, LLC in St. Mary’s County. The firm is a general practice law firm that provides experienced and professional legal services to the businesses, organizations and individuals in the Southern Maryland region. Chris is very involved in the community and presently seves on the: Board of Directors for Christmas in April, St. Mary’s County Chamber of Commerce and St. Mary’s County Community Workforce Housing Task Force.

MLW President Ron Dhindsa named "Outstanding Leader of the Year" by Leadership Maryland
MLW's President, Mr. Ron Dhindsa, was recently named "Outstanding Leader of the Year" by Leadership Maryland. This honor was granted to Ron for his tireless service to Leadership Maryland and Maryland Leadership Workshops, Inc., as well as his service as Chair of the Maryland State Task Force Studying the Compulsory Public School Attendance Age and countless other volunteer endeavors. To honor Ron, Leadership Maryland has made $1,500 donation to Maryland Leadership Workshops in his name. Everyone at MLW is grateful for Ron, and proud to have such a dedicated front man for our organization.
MLW TREASURER MARCY LEONARD NAMED “PRINCIPAL OF THE YEAR!”
MLW Treasurer, Ms. Marcy Leonard, was named "Principal of the Year" in the "Best of 2007" issue of Howard Magazine. Marcy has served as Principal of Atholton High School in Columbia for the past two school years. There was no surprise amongst her fellow MLW staffers, many of whom were her students in recent years, when she recieved this well deserved award. MLW congratulates Marcy and thanks her for her leadership and tireless service to both MLW, and the Atholton community.

Governor
O'Malley Apppoints MLW
Staffer to Higher Education Commission
Recently, longtime MLW staffer Josh Micheal was
appointed by Governor Martin O'Malley to the position of Student
Commissioner to the Maryland Higher Education Commission. Josh is a
former state Student Member of the Board of Education and currently
attends UMBC. The MLW family extends its congratulations to Josh, and
recognize his importance to the success of the MHEC.
MLW 2007 Grant Rundown
During the first half of 2007, Maryland Leadership Workshops was
honored to be awarded grants from the following organizations.
$3,000
from the Klompus Family Foundation.
$10,000 from
the J. Willard and Alice S. Marriott Foundation
$10,000
from the Federal Government in support of Summer programs and the
creation of an Advisors Manual.
$45,000
in Federal Funds to conduct community outreach programs for
students from Alleghany, Wicomico, Baltimore, Prince Georges,
Harford, and Somerset counties, which were held with great success
betweeen June and August as part of the Federal GEARUP Program.

Governor Ehrlich appoints Ron
Dhindsa chair of the Task Force
to Study Raising the Compulsory Public School Attendance Age to 18.
MLW President Ron Dhindsa was appointed by Governor
Robert Ehrlich to
chair the newly-formed Task Force to Study Raising the Compulsory
Public School Attendance Age to 18, authorized in July 2006 and
commenced in November 2006. Mr. Dhindsa serves at the pleasure of the
Governor until December 31, 2007, when the authority of the Task Force
will conclude.
The group will consider the impact of extending the compulsory public
school attendance to age 18 by gathering and reviewing data on extended
learning opportunities for teens between the ages of 15 and 18, and
examining the adequacy of facilities, staff, programming, instructional
time, and resources to accommodate such a change. They will also
project the impact on student attendance and academic achievement, and
assess the fiscal and social benefits to students and the State of
raising the compulsory school attendance age.
MLW Staffer Appointed to
Gov. Ehrlich's "
Task Force on School Safety"
Jillian
Shpuntoff, an MLW alum and current MSEL staffer was appointed to the
newly formed "Task Force on School Safety." The task force, which
includes serveral students as well as teachers, parents, a bus driver,
and local legislators, will begin reporting its findings and
recommendations regarding school safety by December 1st.

newspapers across Maryland.

wins grant from Community Foundation of Prince George's County
MLW has received $5,000 from the
Community Foundation of Prince George's County under their Teens Giving
Grants to Teens Program. This money will be used to provide
scholarships for Prince George's county students to attend our 2006
summer programs. The MLW Policy Board would particularly like to thank
Josh Michael and Monet Spells for their key roles in helping us receive
this grant.

Atholton
High School (Columbia, MD) Principal Marcy Leonard, who has directed
both the MSEL and SHW programs, is featured in an article of the Howard
County edition of the Baltimore Sun.

president graduates from Leadership Maryland Class of 2004
Ranjit S. 'Ron' Dhindsa, Esq., president of
Maryland Leadership Workshops, Inc., recently completed an eight-month
long leadership development program sponsored by Leadership Maryland.
Leadership Maryland, celebrating its 12th
graduating class, honored this Bethesda resident, along with fifty-one
statewide classmates, at a black-tie reception and banquet held
December 7, 2004 at the Renaissance Harborplace Hotel in Baltimore.
Leadership Maryland, an independent,
educational leadership development organization, informs top level
executives from the public and private sectors about the critical
issues, challenges and opportunities facing the State of Maryland, and
its regions. After participating in a broad range of experiences, these
statewide leaders are prepared to address these issues and serve as
important participants in the unified effort to shape Maryland's
future.
"To be informed about
statewide and regional issues, and having the opportunity to engage and
interact with leaders who put themselves on the front line everyday,
has prepared these individuals to be the catalyst for positive change
in Maryland," stated Leadership Maryland Board Chair Dr. Catherine R.
Gira. A 1993 graduate of the program, Dr. Gira is President of
Frostburg State University.
"These are the leaders to
watch, now, and in the future," said Leadership Maryland President
Nancy Minieri. "Their experience confirms that the quality of
leadership affects the success of the solutions. Problems are solved
when committed, dynamic leaders with vision and passion are willing to
take the risk to lead."
The programs will be held at
McDaniel College in Westminster, Md. The cost is $425 if applicants
register before May 15, 2005. Late fees will be charged to applications
received after that date.
Registration forms for the 2005 programs will be available on the MLW
website on October 1, 2004.
At the Reunion, you will reunite with
your fellow delegates and staff members, share successes and challenges
from fall 2004, participate in exciting new teambuilding challenges,
and HAVE FUN! We hope you will leave the Reunion excited to continue
your leadership journey during your spring semester of school and
beyond!
The Reunion will be held Saturday,
December 18, 2004 from 9:30 am to 4:00 pm at Burleigh Manor Middle
School, 4200 Centennial Lane, Ellicott City, Md., 21042. Burleigh Manor
is located in Howard County. Registration will be held from 9:00-9:30
a.m. and the day's activities will begin promptly at 9:30 a.m. Lunch
will be provided.
The registration fee for the
MLW Summer Programs 2004 Reunion is $20. Completed registration forms must be
recieved by the MLW office by December 1, 2004.
The Baltimore Times, a weekly newspaper published
in Baltimore, ran a story about MLW in its local news section. The
article features a brief summary of the organization's history and
includes an interview with MLW President Ron Dhindsa.

2004 alumnus featured in Montgomery County Gazette
The Montgomery County Gazette,
a weekly suburban newspaper and part of the Community Newspaper Group
of Post-Newsweek Media Inc., ran a news brief on Senior High Workshop
2004 alumnus Sara Wahiba. Earlier this year, Leadership Maryland
sponsored a half-page article that also ran in The Gazette.
The
Montgomery County Community Foundation and M&T Bank each
grant MLW $5,000
The Montgomery County Community Foundation
awarded MLW a $5,000 grant to provide scholarships to Montgomery County
youth to attend MLW's summer programs. Authored by MLW Special
Membership Director Conrey Callahan and MLW summer staffer Stefanie
Woodburn, both recent graduates of Montgomery County high schools, the
grant was awarded under the Community Foundation's "Teens Giving Grants
to Teens" iniative. The grant provided scholarship money for 20-30
Montgomery County middle and high school students who have shown
leadership potential and are from economically deprived areas in the
county to attend either the Middle
School Experience in Leadership (MSEL) or Senior High Workshop (SHW).
M&T Bank has also awarded MLW a
$5,000 grant. The money will go toward the organization's operational
expenses.

Maryland Selects MLW President for its Class of
2004
Ranjit S. "Ron" Dhindsa, Esq.,
President, Maryland Leadership Workshops, Inc., and a resident of
Bethesda, has been selected for the Leadership Maryland Class of 2004. Leadership
Maryland is an independent, educational, non-profit
organization designed to inform top-level executives, from the public
and private sectors, about the critical issues, challenges and
opportunities facing the state of Maryland and its regions. Dhindsa is
one of 52 accomplished and talented statewide leaders selected to
participate in the eight-month program.
Following a two-day opening retreat in
April, participants will attend five two-day, and one one-day intense
sessions focusing on issues, such as, economic development, education,
health and human services, criminal and juvenile justice, environment,
and multi-culturalism. More than 100 experts representing business,
government, education, and the non-profit community will serve as
panelists and guest speakers.
"The participants represent a broad
spectrum of highly qualified executives from an extraordinary group of
applicants statewide," according to Nancy Wolff-Minieri, President of
Leadership Maryland. "After participating in a comprehensive range of
experiences over the next year, these leaders will serve as important
participants in the unified effort to shape Maryland's future."
