About MLW
For 50 years, Maryland Leadership Workshops, Inc. (MLW) has challenged Maryland youth to realize their leadership potential. MLW has successfully empowered thousands of students to exercise leadership in enhancing their own lives, the lives of their peers, and their schools and communities. Additionally, MLW has helped train teachers on how to effectively advise student groups. MLW is a State-Aided Educational Institution in partnership with Leadership Maryland and the Maryland Association of Student Councils.
We believe that leadership is of paramount importance in addressing the challenges faced by society and improving our local communities. Youth are society's greatest resource, and thus we must instill in them the confidence, skills, and characteristics to successfully pursue their goals and passions and strengthen Maryland. As Maryland State Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Nancy S. Grasmick , has noted, "MLW, Maryland's premier provider of leadership training, consistently empowers youth to exercise leadership within their schools and communities and achieve success in all facets of their lives."
MLW offers community outreach programs that cater to the specific needs and desires of each individual client. Whether our client is a high school student government, an entire middle school, or a group of teachers, our inservice programs fit our clients' needs.
MLW offers three very different week-long residential summer programs annually during the last week of July and the first week of August: The Middle School Experience in Leadership (MSEL), the Senior High Workshop (SHW) and the Advanced Leadership Seminar (ALS).
Our programs provide unique opportunities for students to grow by developing the skills of leadership and the skills of life. Students learn about such topics as: self awareness, leadership styles, interpersonal communication, ethics, peer mediation, understanding diversity, group dynamics, conflict resolution, public speaking, stress management, time management, problemsolving, delegation, public relations, decision outcomes, goal setting, evaluation, and how to run a meeting. Perhaps most importantly, students have a multitude of opportunities to actually apply the skills they are learning through the various activities and projects they plan and implement during the week long program.
Our programs have been consistently rated exceptional by students, parents, and educators in the Mid-Atlantic region. The programs are facilitated by an experienced staff of young professionals with various leadership backgrounds in education, youth services, business, law,and student organizations. The peer teaching model and creative teaching techniques we employ enable our instructors and counselors not only to relate to our students, but to motivate and inspire them to learn. We are absolutely certain that you will both experience tremendous growth and have a lot of fun at our program.
Not only have MLW graduates consistently excelled as student leaders in their schools and communities, but they have been able to implement the skills they learn at our programs in all aspects of their lives, in college and beyond.
Should you desire information concerning the MSEL, SHW or ALS programs or our inservice programs, please contact us. We hope to hear from you.
